Did you get the yolk? Four reasons to enjoy those yolks

Why do people enjoy hard boiled eggs so much? They’re hard to beat.

Ha, did you get the yolk? No, but all yolks aside, egg yolks are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. So much so that they’ve been dubbed ‘nature’s multi-vitamin’.

So why are egg yolks so great?

Egg yolks are a true superfood.

Ever get confused by contradictory and dogmatic dietary advice? Or by the countless supplements, multi-vitamins and superfood powders we’re supposed to buy into? Well, good news. You can stop wasting your money on expensive superfood powders and start with the basics. Egg yolks are among the most nutritious foods on the planet.

Egg yolks contain unique antioxidants and powerful brain nutrients that most people are deficient in, making them an excellent mood food.

Egg yolks are one of the best sources of choline, which reduces inflammation and promotes brain function, like maintaining memory and communications between brain cells.

Egg yolks contain a host of essential nutrients. This is why they’re often called ‘nature's multi-vitamin’.

Egg yolks contain vitamin A, E, D, and K, and vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 as well as the essential minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc.

Egg yolks are high in the anti-oxidants lutein and zeaxanthin

Lutein and zeaxanthin are great for eye health but they've also been found to promote healthy skin, improve blood flow, lower oxidative stress and inflammation, and improve cognitive performance and memory.

But won’t egg yolks increase my cholesterol?

There is no doubt dat egg yolks have received a bad rep in the past. However, there is xxx to these claims.

Not only is the science behind 'the ‘eating cholesterol will raise your cholesterol’ flawed, egg yolks can actually improve your cholesterol levels.

Several studies looking at how eggs affects the risk of heart disease found no association between the two. What's more - yolks increase HDL (aka the good cholesterol) and change the dens harmful LDL (aka the bad cholesterol) type to the less harmful fluffy LDL type!

Remind me to write a blog post on cholesterol types..

Conclusion: enjoy those eggs.

WTM’s tip for getting the most out of your yolks: opt for omega-3 and pastured eggs because not all eggs are created equal. The nutrient content of eggs depends on how they were raised and fed.

Duck, quail, goose, and turkey eggs also contain higher amounts of nutrients than chicken eggs, so these are an excellent choice.
